The 2018 SI4DEV Causes include twenty community-driven projects ranging from girls education, vocational skills transfer, safe and clean water, digital technology, hand-washing hygiene, child health, eye care, education for internally displaced children, poverty alleviation programs and governance accountability. These project funds raised will be supported with matching funds, and disbursed to help accelerate partner’s social change efforts and grow their impact.

This project provides practical training, hand hygiene awareness education, and accompanying visual aids and educational manuals to children at risk of illness through the transfer of germs at school. Hand washing correctly with soap and water can protect one in three young children who get sick with diarrhea and one in five young children with respiratory infections like pneumonia. This emphasizes how important it is for children to learn how to wash their hands as early as possible.
Benue State has experienced unprecedented insurgency in the past year with an increasing number of internally displaced (IDP) families seeking refuge in temporary camps. The most at-risk and vulnerable group in these camps are school-age children. The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) report (April, 2018) lists 8,000 ID Children at RCM Daudu Camp. This project will provide community-based educational services and teachers’ training on social skills to support children living with trauma.
Young adolescent girls who are displaced from their homes due to terrorism, crisis and poverty and forced to live in IDPs camps suffer from lack of proper care, support and even advice during their menstrual flow hereby making them vulnerable and susceptible to vaginal infections as well as unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. This project aims to provide sanitary pads and hygiene education to 50 girls in a school within the Bama/Gwoza IDP camp and nearby community schools
Due to the high youth unemployment rate in Nigeria – averaging 22% from 2014 – 2017, and reaching an all time high of 33% in 2017 – there is depression and lack of self-worth among in-school youths which has led to an increase in social vices like teenage prostitution, pregnancy, abortion, suicide, violence, drug use and involvement in gangs. This project will use mentoring, positive role modelling, peer groups, training on career options and work ethics, life skills, and civic participation.
The major issue bothering the people of Sabo community in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State is lack of clean and drinkable water. This issue can be addressed by making available pipe-born water for the community. This project will provide and maintain 1 (one) manual borehole that will provide the entire community with a clean and consumable water.
Youth’s unemployment had fueled negative vices which is a threat to the peace and security of lives and properties within the community. Most of these youths become tools for greedy and selfish politicians as political thugs and assassins. This project would empower 30 youths in the formal/informal sector within the age of 15-30 years with leadership and entrepreneurship skills in Electrical wiring, CCTV camera installations and Telecommunication Services.
In Nigeria, there is a gap in educational access and achievement, with girls far behind. According to the 2016 world economic report, Nigeria ranks 127th out of 144 countries in equitable educational attainment across genders. This is evident in Jikwoyi community where the education gap is rooted in girls lack engagement in the education system as well as their outcomes. This micro project will pay school fees for 50 out-of-school girls and teach them sexual and reproductive rights and skills.
This project will promote the eradication of waste disposal in Government Secondary School Doka (Boys) in two phases – a Clean- up exercise for 2 weeks and fencing the school using upcycling of plastics and tyre within 4 months. Indiscrimate dumping of waste and open defecation in the school premises has led to increase in absenteeism among students as the condition of learning is quite poor due to obnoxious smell and frequent outbreaks of diarrhea and other diseases in the student population.
This project will create economic opportunities for 120 impoverished villagers in Nigeria whereby each would be trained on confectionery skill acquisition and the needed ideas to start up a business from the acquired skill. There would be a startup fund for each trainee to invest in his or her business which they will reimburse within the duration of six months.
This project will create awareness and access to eye care by conducting educative seminars and eye examinations and interventions for about 1000 school children, and training teachers to use visual acuity charts in 10 schools in Warri, Delta state, for 6 months. In Nigeria, seeking vision care for children is not the norm because of limited knowledge about prevention and treatment for vision problems. Creating awareness about vision problems will be a key factor to tackling visual impairments.
This project will provide counseling units in rural secondary schools for a period of three months, to mentor children to be the best version of themselves and contribute to improving their community. We will offer great counsel and teach leadership skills to students in rural secondary schools to help them develop, not just academically but emotionally and socially, to inculcate the right leadership values and the idea of a better Nigeria, as ambassadors for the right values.
Children’s life chances are strongly influenced by the quality of their education. Schools aim at providing children with knowledge and interpersonal skills required for their development, adult life and contributions to society. This attribute is particularly key if the child is living in a disadvantaged environment (Heckman, 2008; Heckman, 2011). This project will encourage enthusiasm to learn in poor students in Osun state, Nigeria by providing them with lacking class tools and motivation.
This project will provide and maintain a public toilets for health sanitation in Tombia, Bayelsa State for 2 years. This is important, in order to make sanitation accessible to everyone in the community. Atleast 45% of the people do not have toilets and do open defecation, affecting the river water quality, and thereby resulting in waterborne diseases. This modern toilet will reduce incidence of such diseases which can lead to death of infants, high medical expenses and low saving ability.
Water shortage in the Olla community has various social economic problem associated with it such as water related diseases, high work load and burden of going too far distance river by women, poor hygiene at primary schools and disturbance of carrying water from home to school and low income due to high water expenditure. This project will improve access to clean water for Olla community through sinking of Water borehole and help reduce the above mentioned challenges.
In Kano state Nigeria, poverty, illiteracy, unprotected sex and stigma play a role in making PLWHA hide their identity and infect other people (Nwokedi 2007). According to the 2016-2017 multiple indicator cluster survey on stigmatization, 19.3% male and 6.5% female adolescents 15-19years respectively express accepting attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS. This project will survey teenage girls on their KAPs and provide information on transmission, prevention and treatment.
This project will include seminars for youth and their parents as well as distribution of instructional materials. The reinforcement measure will be establishment of clubs through partnerships with schools. The primary aim of this program is to reduce the intake of hard drugs by members of the community. Secondarily, the program has been planned towards sustaining the message against drug abuse for younger generations. We will promote talents in sports, art, plays, and music as replacement.
We will provide computer sets and other accessories for printing and enhance digital literacy at Our Lady Mother of Perpetual Help Primary/Secondary School & orphanage Home. The orphans would have opportunity to access digital literacy for free while other people from the community pay to attend the school and acquire computer skills. The school will be able to print test and exams question from their facility which will also be paid for, thereby ensuring sustainability.
This project will support a community leader in their social enterprise for the production of palm oil and distributing of affordable quality and accessible palm oil in Nigeria and beyond. They will purchase more modern machines and buy palm fruits from smallholder farmers to supply a business range of palm oil products.
The program will enhance the employ-ability of 100 recent school drop outs and other unemployed youths (16-30 years). Unemployment has eaten deep into the society, as a result, young school leavers, undergraduates and graduates are left idle in Bayelsa State where kidnapping, drugs, cultism and teenage pregnancy are increasing vices caused by unemployment. We will equip a skill acquisition center to provide vocational skills so participants can start up businesses and become employers of labor.
This project will improve literacy and promote reading culture among over 1500 children, young people and their families in Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, Nigeria. Lacking vital literacy skills like reading holds a person back at every stage of their life. As a child they won’t be able to succeed at school, as a young adult they will be locked out of the job market, and as a parent they won’t be able to support their own child’s learning. This cycle makes social mobility virtually impossible!
