Strategy and Innovation for Development Initiative (SI4DEV) is an NGO registered in Nigeria and committed to empowering community leaders/partners. On Saturday, the 17th day of March 2018, SI4DEV Makurdi location group partnered with Rotaract Zone G Benue state club of Nigeria, District 9125 Makurdi in carrying out a thorough sanitation of INEC North bank area to Yagba market.
The Rotary club was carrying out this activity to commemorate her Golden jubilee in Nigeria.
In view of this Amb. Bem Timothy a partner with SI4DEV Makurdi location participated actively in the cleanup with Dooufanter Dema a volunteer in the same SI4DEV Makurdi location.
SITES VISITED
INEC office Area North bank through to Yagba market all in North-bank Makurdi local government area of Benue State.
ACTIVITY CARRIED OUT
The Rotary club with the SI4DEV team first converged beside the INEC office at 7:00 am were they met with the community heads. The Rotary anthem and the National anthem was sang, after that the team moved to borrow some extra sanitation implements to make up for the ones they brought. The proper clean up, weeding and burning of refuse started by 8:00 am.
KEY OBSERVATIONS
• The sanitary condition within the activity location is not good, as the people in this locality are still practicing open defecation.
• Food vendors were selling their meals in this un–hygienic area.
• The transformer housing was filled with weeds and plenty waste and in danger, could there be fire ignited near-by.
NEXT STEP
The community is in dire need of refuse/waste bin or/and incinerator(s).
The community needs this clean up to be a regular activity at least quarterly within a calendar year.
There is need for health and sanitation advocacy (education) pro bono publico.
Stringent sanitation laws should be in place for possible implementation.
