REPORT ON A VISIT TO FAITH WORK’S ORPHANGE MINISTRY IN COMMEMORATION OF GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY HOSTED BY SI4DEV KADUNA, KADUNA STATE

BACKGROUND OF THE VISIT

The Global youth service day (GYSD) is largest annual event which gathers young people around the world in conducting community service that benefits communities, states and countries. Partners for Strategy and innovation for development initiative (SI4DEV) in kaduna commemorated the day by paying a visit to an orphanage in a bid to render community service.
OBJECTIVES OF THE VISIT
To create awareness about SI4DEV
To Educate children about the importance of Hand washing, sanitation and Good health
To Enlighten children about career choices and quality education
To Make Donation of items such as Exercise books, pencils, text books, novels and Hand wash to the orphanage.
DESCRIPTION AND SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

BRIEF MEETING

Before proceeding to orphanage we held a brief meeting at porch eatery where new members were welcomed they include; Nasir Nato, Ismail Aliyu, Valentine Idaewor, Yosi Danjuma and Jude John. Shortly after that, we distributed SI4DEV branded shirt to members as well as took logistics of all items to be donated to the orphanage. Mr Samuel marked his birthday as part of his goodwill he donated 64 used textbooks. At 2.43pm we proceeded for the orphanage.

THE VISIT

We started off the event by a brief introduction of partners and participants this was led by treasure and shortly after that Chukwudi introduced SI4DEV, its mission and vision as well as spoke about the global youth service day and the reasons for the visit.

PRESENTATION OF ITEMS
The sum of 5,000 was sent by the programme manager to commemorate the event this was used for the purchase of 64 exercise books, 6 branded hand wash, sharpeners and pencils alongside other donations from Rekana Foundation. Mr Samuel facilitated this session by presenting the items on behalf of SI4DEV kaduna location group to Mr marvelous representing the orphanage.

CAREER TALK

Yosi Danjuma led the session on career choices and the need for quality education. She started off by asking questions from the kids about their respective choice of career, we were all surprised that a large number of the children wanted to be bankers. She also spoke about the importance of a career and need for quality education. At the end of the session the children gained more insight about various types of careers.

HEALTH TALK ON HAND WASHING AND PREVENTION AGAINST CHOLERA AND LASSA FEVER

John and Lawal facilitated this session. Prior to this John engage the children with an energizer called “bananas of the world” this got the children excited and happy. Partners and children were asked to raise their palm in a bid to find out clean hands and unclean ones, He discussed what germs are, the importance of handwashing and prevention against cholera as well as other communicable diseases. At the end of the session a hand washing exercise was carried out with the aim of teaching the children on proper hand washing methods with the use of a hand wash, detergent or soap.

FUN GAMES
We rounded up the programme by engaging the children on fun games such as Secret leader and blind train. These games taught all participants the attributes and importance of a leader in a group in order to achieve set goals. At the end everyone was excited and loved the experience.

OUTCOMES/ PATNERSHIP AND OPPORTUNITIES
The end of the programme, the founder of rakana foundation addressed everyone and commended patners for great job. He further introduced his foundation and looked forward to working with SI4DEV in the area of education and health.

NEXT STEPS
We Agreed to start planning for next project themed “happy learners project” slated for 27th of March. A meeting will be held on Saturday this is geared towards proper planning and execution of the project.

WHAT COULD WE HAVE BEEN DONE BETTER

Introduce more energizers between sessions to ensure rapt attention by the children

Reach out to more orphanages in subsequent events

Write to other NGO’s and foundations and solicit for partnership to execute projects
